Family Fun with the Harlem Globetrotters Globie Family

The Harlem Globetrotters came to Jacksonville!  The boys, Tyler in particular, were very excited to attend.  The event was the day before Trever’s 10th birthday, which was a great way to kick off “Treverstock.”  What’s Treverstock, you ask? Well in this family we  think birthdays are so special that they should not be celebrated in a mere 24 hours, but an entire week! Somewhere along the way Troy label the birthday weeks as “(fill in the name) stock”.” We let Trever choose where to eat before heading downtown and he choose Golden Corral .  Once our bellies were stuffed full we loaded up in the van and headed downtown to take in the action of the Globetrotter’s You Write the Rules Tour.

We secured a parking spot close to the Veteran’s Memorial Arena and headed in for the game. The Globetrotters were introduced, as well as, the competing team, the Selects.  Globie, the team mascot, did some dances and silliness with team prior to starting the game.  Globie “danced” to Cumbawamba’s I get knocked down and got a great round of laughs from the audience. Really, it was one of the funniest things we saw all night.

From all appearances and the game introduction it appeared as if it was a typical basketball game.  Then the announcer stated it was the World Championship basketball game. The Globetrotters vs the Selects head to head in the finals.  globiefamily

Tyler, ever the competitor was on the edge of his seat.  He could not believe we were rows away from watching the World Championship!  The ball tipped off and the silliness of the Globetrotter’s kicked in to high gear.

Harlem Globetrotters, You write the rules tour

This season the Harlem Globetrotters, for the first time ever, let fans be in charge and get to call the shots.

The idea behind The Globetrotters new World Tour show, “You Write The Rules” … that YOU decide the new rule we add to Globetrotters basketball, a rule that could affect the outcome of the game!!!

As an audience we were asked to tweet the Harlem Globetrotters and tell them which rule we would change during the game. The first quarter of the game the basketball floor was stickered up with big #4’s.  If a player was to nail a shot from the circle with a big #4 they would receive 4 pts for the shot.  The second quarter of the game they played for double points, meaning that each point scored would be doubled.  It was fun to see the game played with different rules.  The Globetrotters were up to their usual antics of showing off their ball handling skills and bending of the rules in order to be silly.  At one point the Globetrotters were down by 8 points and one of the players literally jumped up on to the hoop and sat in it to keep the Select’s from scoring.  Tyler could not understand why the Globetrotters wouldn’t buckle down and play the game the right way to win!

World Championship

Despite the nail biting moments the Globetrotters won the World Championship!!  We had a wonderful time at the Harlem Globetrotter’s event. It was a wonderful way to begin the festivities of Treverstock.  The Globetrotter’s proved that they are still as entertaining and relevant in 2013 as they were when they first rose to popularity.

The tour has not concluded yet, there is still time to make certain that you and your family don’t miss out on this exciting event.
