Each summer our church, Grace Lutheran, hosts vacation bible school. This year’s them is Kingdom Rock! The theme is determined by Group, a company that offers a template and program for vacation bible schools. My friends Erin, Ann and I took up the task to decorate the narthex and the entrance to the family life center. We watched the video’s featured on Group’s Kingdom Rock VBS page and searched Pinterest for inspiration. After careful planning and preparations we transformed the narthex into the exterior of a castle.
We wrapped the walls in butcher paper or other wise known a bulletin board paper. On the white butcher paper we took gray paint and grout sponges to create the brick look. We cut out caps for the castle with poster board and sponged it as well. We secured the paper to the walls with lots and lots of clear packing tape.
For the sconces we spray painted Styrofoam cones black. We also cut off the bottom of yellow clear plastic cups and dug them down into the cone. We then taped the cone to the wall with clear packing tape and filled the cup with yellow and red tissue paper.
Ann’s husband, Dave, created the chain mail walk through with duct tape and instructions from the Kingdom Rock page. He attached it to the ceiling with push pins and clear packing tape.
The entrance to the family life center has a trophy case highlighting the school athletic accomplishments. We chose to wrap the case the same way we did the walls in the narthex, as the exterior walls of a castle. We also draped plastic table cloths across to ceiling to create a royal effect.
In the family life center we did not have to decorate a whole lot because of a beautiful mural that was created by another member of the church. The draped ceiling complimented the mural beautifully.
This is my third summer decorating for vacation bible school. It is a very rewarding experience and I cannot wait to do it again next summer!
